Product Overview
The Pentair ETi is a premium condensing gas pool and spa heater series offered in 250,000 and 400,000-BTU configurations. Both models use ASME-certified Titan-Tough™ direct-fire titanium heat exchangers, flexible Category IV venting, and service-oriented cabinet designs. The ETi 400 delivers 96% thermal efficiency, while the ETi 250 is rated at 94% on natural gas and 96% when converted to propane.
Performance is the ETi family's strongest category. The 400 combines 400,000-BTU input with 96% thermal efficiency, while the 250 provides 250,000 BTU at 94% on natural gas or 96% after propane conversion. That means substantially more of the fuel input reaches the pool than with typical 82–84% gas heaters. Titanium direct-fire exchangers and flexible venting further strengthen the platform's high-performance positioning.
The titanium exchanger removes one of the major corrosion vulnerabilities found in conventional copper heaters, and Pentair backs the ETi with a three-year parts-and-labor warranty. However, the high-efficiency design also relies on blowers, combustion controls, condensate management, sensors, and additional safety systems. Available field reports range from trouble-free ownership to costly service experiences, making the overall long-term record more mixed than the exchanger construction alone suggests.
Pentair provides unusually extensive ETi service documentation, individual replacement components, heat-exchanger cleaning instructions, and commonality with some MasterTemp parts. The trade-off is diagnostic complexity: airflow, ignition, combustion, gas pressure, water flow, venting, condensate, and electronic controls can all influence operation. Repairs may therefore require more specialized heater knowledge than a conventional atmospheric or forced-draft platform.
Public ETi-specific ownership feedback remains relatively limited and mixed. Some ETi 400 owners report excellent heating performance and multiple seasons of satisfaction, while other discussions cite high purchase cost, limited technician familiarity, or expensive repairs. The evidence supports strong performance, but not yet a consistently Positive ownership grade across the full series.
The ETi is a premium high-efficiency heater family combining exceptional fuel utilization, titanium exchanger durability, and flexible installation features. Its performance advantages are substantial, but condensing operation adds installation, maintenance, and diagnostic requirements that make proper commissioning and access to qualified service particularly important.
A compelling choice for homeowners who prioritize gas-heating efficiency, corrosion resistance, and premium construction and are comfortable with higher upfront cost. The ETi is best installed and maintained by professionals familiar with condensing pool heaters, with particular attention to gas supply, water flow, venting, condensate drainage, and preventative maintenance.
